Use the Outline task type to create groups of tasks within a project plan, where the outline task is just a convenient grouping of the sub-tasks. For example, you might have an outline for "High priority" tasks.
An outline task is an information-only task. It has no start and end. You can:
- Change task details
- Create Sub tasks
- Manage planned Dates
- Delete task
You can also use the Open log option from the tasks' context menu or in the Task details Messages section to view task events and to enter notes. This is just like Chat except that the log is not shared.
Outline tasks do not participate in dependency processing. You do not need to start an outline before starting its sub tasks. However, if the outline is itself a sub-task of a non-outline task, the outline's parent task will need to be started before the outline's sub tasks can start.
If you want to break a large task into sub-tasks, it can make more sense to use the Task task type in place of outline, as it allows you to track the start and finish of the top-level task.
