How Relay uses folders

Everything in Relay is contained in folders. Folders can contain other folders, just like folders on a PC.

Home folder

The home folder is the top-level of the folder hierarchy.

Every user can access the home folder, and from there navigate to any other folder to which they have access.

Folders only show sub folders to which the user has authority, so different users get a different view of the home folder depending on what authority they have on sub folders.

Projects

Some folders are used to contain tasks, and Relay calls these folders "projects".

If you are using a custom version of Relay, the folders containing tasks might be called something else, depending on what Relay is being used for.

Other uses of folders

As well as providing a structure and containing tasks, folders are used for other purposes.

Connections

Each Relay account connects to other Relay accounts to allow people to work with each other. Each connection is represented by a folder, called a "connection folder".

A connection folder acts as an outbox for work going to the partner account, and as an inbox for work coming from the partner account.

Modules

The portal on which Relay runs uses plug-in modules to control functionality. Modules are attached to the portal using connections, just like partner accounts, and module connections have connection folders.

Module connection folders are used to access administrative features of the module, and to create folders the functionality of which are controlled by the module.

Permissions

Folders are also used as the basis for permissions.

You can attach individual users or groups of users to a folder, which gives the users permission to use the folder,  and to the tasks and sub folders within it.

Folders are used to control navigation, structure work, control connections, manage functionality and to maintain security. Only administrators can maintain folders, giving administrators control over how Relay appears, how work is structured, and how connections, modules and security are set up.
